New look and interface tweaks

We just deployed a new look for the secure portion of the site. Hopefully you find it cleaner and easier to use.

We have also made the recording of Voice tags optional. Just check the box for Respond to voice tags? if you want SpokenText to respond to voice tags you have placed into your text content. Note that if your voice tags are not well formed or you have text within your content which looks like a voice tag your recording will fail to be recorded.

If you notice any issues with this release please contact info@spokentext.net.

Thanks

Audio book format best for listening to long recordings

Today I was talking to a member of the site on the phone who was using mp3 files to distribute recordings he had created.

Mp3 is a great format but if your intended audience has access to an Apple device like an iPhone, iPod or iPad or even a computer running iTunes then it might be better to send your intended audience our Audio Book formatted files.

This type of file when used in iTunes or any iOS device like an iPhone,iPad or iPod will remember the last position the recording was at and start from that point when you next listen to the recording.

This is the format I use to listen to all of the long format recordings I use SpokenText to create. One other option is to download the recording from your SpokenText podcast URL and then access it via the podcast section of your device or iTunes. When accessed this way the recording will remember its last position.

I have found that either of these two options are best when listening to long format recordings.

Happy listening :-)

Unalbe to access site on Aug 28 2012

There was an issue with our domain name renewal on Aug 28 2012 which made it impossible to access the site for around 6 hours or so. The site and our servers were still running fine but with the domain name not working know one could access it.

This is the first period of down time of any kind we have had in years. We take up time very seriously and will try to make sure that this type of issue never happens again.

Sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused. If you are still having issues reaching our site please try to clear your browser cache and restart your browser if it has been open for a while.

Adding a pause to your recording

If you want to add a pause add <BREAK/ > into your text.

Example: What is 3 + 3 <Break /> 6

Or you can use <Break time="3s" /> to add a 3 second break.

Example: What is 3 + 3 <Break time="3s" /> 6

Note: Recording of Voice tags optional. Just check the box for Respond to voice tags? if you want SpokenText to respond to voice tags you have placed into your text content. Note that if your voice tags are not well formed or you have text within your content which looks like a voice tag your recording will fail to be recorded.

Create a dialog between voices

Want to create a dialog between two different voices talking. Maybe to hear your screen play or novel read to you?

Here is how you can do it:

Wrap the text you want in a different voice as follows.

<voice gender=”male, female, neutral” >...</voice>

For example:

Where do you want to eat tonight?

<voice gender=”female”> Let’s go for pizza </voice>

Listen to it

For this test I set my default voice in the list provided on the New Recordings tab to
Mike

This way you only have to put the tags around one of the talkers and not both.

Note: Recording of Voice tags optional. Just check the box for Respond to voice tags? if you want SpokenText to respond to voice tags you have placed into your text content. Note that if your voice tags are not well formed or you have text within your content which looks like a voice tag your recording will fail to be recorded.

Audio Book and Multiple MP3 formats now optional.

We have made the Audio Book and Multiple MP3 formats optional for all paid accounts.

This way only the people who need them can ask to have them created by checking either the “Create Audio Book file” or “Create multiple mp3 file” options at the bottom of the New Recordings page.

This should speed up conversion times for everyone.

Happy recording :-)
